Google's March 2026 core update started rolling out on March 27 and finished on April 8. It was the first broad ranking update of the year, and like every core update it reshuffled results across nearly every industry. If you saw movement, you were not alone.
What a core update is
Google makes small changes to search all the time. A few times a year it releases a core update, a broad change to how it judges the quality and usefulness of content. There is no single factor to fix, and no penalty to remove. Your pages are simply being re-evaluated against everything else on the web.
What keeps winning
- Content written by people with real experience in the topic
- Pages that answer a specific question completely
- Original information: your own photos, data, examples and opinions
- Sites that are fast, mobile friendly and easy to use
- Clear signals of who is behind the business and how to reach them
What keeps losing
- Thin pages written to target a keyword rather than help a reader
- Mass-produced content that says the same thing as everyone else
- Location pages that only swap the city name
For local businesses, the biggest lever is usually not more content. It is better content on the pages that already matter: your services, your locations and your about page.
Three things to do this month
- Review your top 10 landing pages in Search Console and make each one the best answer on the web for its topic.
- Add real proof: project photos, reviews, credentials and specifics.
- Merge or remove pages that are nearly identical to each other.
Core updates reward the same thing over and over: being genuinely useful. That is good news for any business willing to show what it actually knows.
