Six Google Business Profile Changes Local Businesses Should Act On This Fall

AI answered questions, multi-location posting, WhatsApp replacing chat and a shift toward engagement signals. Here is what changed on Google Business Profile this year and what to do about each.

Your Google Business Profile is still the most valuable free marketing asset a local business has. It is often the first thing a customer sees and the place they decide whether to call, visit or keep scrolling. Google kept changing it in 2026, and a few of those changes reward businesses that stay active.

1. AI answers customer questions, with a review step

Google now uses AI to draft answers to questions people ask about your business, and those answers go into a review queue before they publish. Do not ignore that queue. An unreviewed answer can be outdated or just wrong about your hours, pricing or services.

2. One post, many locations

Multi-location businesses can now write a single post and publish it across locations at once. If you run more than one location, there is no longer an excuse for one active profile and five abandoned ones.

3. WhatsApp is replacing Business Chat

Google has been phasing out its old Business Chat in favor of WhatsApp and SMS. If customers used to message you through your profile, make sure the right number is connected and someone actually answers it.

4. You can react to reviews

Businesses can now react to reviews with an emoji. It is small, but it is another quick signal that a real person is paying attention. It does not replace a written reply on anything negative.

5. Engagement matters more

Industry observers have noticed ranking weight moving toward engagement signals like clicks and review activity, not just how established a business is. In practice: the profile that gets photos, posts, reviews and replies every week tends to beat the one that was set up once in 2019.

6. Products and services show up more directly

Products, services and Local Services Ads are being pulled more directly into profiles. Fill out your services list with real descriptions, not just names, because that content is increasingly what customers see first.

Quick test: search your business name on your phone right now. Are the hours right? Is the main photo something you would choose? Is the last post older than a month? If any answer is no, start there.

A simple weekly routine

  • Post once a week (an offer, an event, a project or a photo of the team)
  • Reply to every review within 48 hours
  • Check the Q&A review queue
  • Add new photos every month
  • Confirm holiday hours before every holiday

None of this is complicated. It just has to happen consistently, which is the part most businesses struggle with. That is exactly the kind of work we take off your plate.
