Why We Build Websites in Custom Code Instead of Templates

WordPress themes, Squarespace and Wix get a site live fast. Here is why we build custom instead, what it costs and when a template is honestly fine.

We get asked this a lot: why not just use WordPress or Squarespace like everyone else? For years we did. We still take over and manage plenty of those sites. But every new site we build now is custom code, and the reasons come down to speed, control and results.

1. Speed you can feel

Templates load code for every feature they might ever need. A custom site loads only what it uses. On a phone over a weak signal, that is the difference between a page that appears instantly and one people leave before it finishes loading. Speed affects both rankings and conversions.

2. No plugin roulette

A typical WordPress site runs on a stack of plugins from different developers. Every update is a chance for something to break or a security hole to open. Custom sites have far fewer moving parts.

3. Built around how you make money

Templates are designed to look good in a demo. We design around the action that matters to your business: a call, a booking, a quote request or an event inquiry. Then we track it.

4. SEO built in, not bolted on

Clean code, fast pages, structured data, proper headings and real HTML instead of PDFs or image text. That is the foundation search engines and AI tools read.

5. You own it

Your site lives in your own code repository and deploys to modern hosting. No proprietary builder you are locked into.

Is a template ever the right call? Yes. If you are just starting out and need something live this week on a tiny budget, a clean template is fine. Custom makes sense once your website is supposed to bring in real business.

What about my existing site?

We take over WordPress, Squarespace, Wix and other platforms all the time. Sometimes the right move is to improve what you have. Sometimes it is a rebuild, carrying over every page and URL so you do not lose rankings. We will tell you which one makes sense and why.
