A few years ago the idea of ads inside an AI chatbot sounded like a rumor. In 2026 it became real. OpenAI announced ads for ChatGPT in January, shipped the first paid placements in February, and by summer sponsored results were showing up across a large share of US conversations. Every business owner we talk to is asking the same thing: do I need to be there?
How ChatGPT ads work
- Ads appear as a clearly labeled sponsored card below ChatGPT's answer, with a brand name, headline, short description and link.
- They show to logged-in adults on the free and lower-cost plans. Paid tiers like Plus and Pro do not see them.
- Targeting is based on what the person is asking about, not on audience profiles.
Who can actually buy them
As of this summer there is no self-serve dashboard like Google Ads or Meta. Ads are sold through OpenAI's sales team, and early buyers were large brands with large minimum spends. Reports put early pricing well out of reach for a typical local business, though pricing has moved from impressions toward cost per click and minimums have come down for some advertisers.
Our honest take
For most local and regional businesses, ChatGPT ads are not where your next dollar should go yet. The buying process is built for big brands, and the targeting tools are basic. That will change, probably faster than people expect.
What does matter right now: being the business ChatGPT recommends without paying for it. Organic AI visibility is free, and it compounds.
What to do instead, today
- Make sure your website clearly states what you do, where you do it and who it is for. AI tools quote pages that are specific.
- Keep your Google Business Profile, Yelp and directory listings consistent. AI answers pull from them.
- Earn reviews that mention specific services and neighborhoods.
- Publish pages that answer the real questions customers ask before they buy.
- Track the AI Assistant channel in Google Analytics so you can see AI-driven visits grow.
When self-serve ChatGPT ads arrive for smaller budgets, the businesses that already show up organically will be the ones with the best data to build on. We will be testing them the moment they open up, and we will tell you straight whether they are worth it.
